How many days: 3 days
Length: 200km round trip but I rode from Balatonfured, anti-clockwise to Szantod and took the ferry across (to avoid the most populated areas).
Accommodation: Caravan Parks and Campgrounds
How to get there: I took the train from Budapest and hired a bike with panniers in Balatonfured
Feeling:
My Hungarian Games: Cycle around Lake Balaton. The Mongols trashed it, the Turks occupied it, the Austrians bombed it, and then I rode around it!
I’ve had one hell of a weird time riding 3 days solo around this lake in the centre of Hungary.
This was my first international multi-day bike adventure, completely unplanned but not unprepared. The language barrier is real (Nobody spoke English) and on the first night I had accidentally checked into a nudist colony thinking it was a normal campground.
I also packed ultralight which included no shoes, no helmet and no idea. I had a ball! Main concerns were fighting the heat, finding power to charge my phone, getting yelled at multiple times in Hungarian (mainly forgetting in a panic to ride on the right) and learning that off the side of the path is full of stinging nettles (the grass is lava!).
Many swims, many odd moments, many realizations that I’m pretty bloody good at this. Also I know that I’m spending my time in Eastern Europe just like every Australian should – Naked and Confused
